Brian Elliott, Midweek Wines, June 2023:
Le Professeur Marselan
"Marselan is a cross between cabernet sauvignon and grenache and was developed in France about 60 years ago. While older marselans can display their parent’s typical flavours and richness, young versions like this often provide lighter, youthful, summer drinking when gently chilled. Dark in colour but light in body, this example delivers juicy blackcurrant and red plum flavours coupled with good acidity and suggestions of fudge and cinnamon."
Joanna Simon, Week of the Week, 15/06/2023
Nosiola Trentino Cantina Lavis 2020
"You need to let this lithe, young, north Italian white open up in your glass to enjoy it at its best, so pour it out, give it a good swirl and linger over it. You'll be rewarded with an airy, fragrant Alpine nose of wild herbs and flowers and a nimble palate that starts with fresh, grassy, soft-leaved herbs and gathers apple, quince, a touch of toasted almond and white pepper around it."
The Guardian, David Williams
Big Beltie Cabernet Sauvignon
"In the right hands, cabernet sauvignon is far too interesting and adaptable a grape to ignore, however, with a wine such as the superb-value Big Beltie bringing a little French Mediterranean solar charge to the classic cassis characters."
Decanter Panel Tastings
Santa Luz Sauvignon Blanc Gran Reserva, 2021
Outstanding - Decanter, May 2023, Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Panel Tasting, 95 points: PR "Roasted pepper and pea pod, honeyed pear, some gunflint. Savoury layered complexity; rounded and succulent. Very SB, with that added gunflint complexity. Edgy but it works." BG "Pronounced asparagus, lemon, green pepper nose. Capsicum and citrus on the palate, good zing, a citrus-led finish. Lively and expressive." DV "Restrained and elegant. Fruit includes grapefruit, with peppers, yeasty and flinty notes. Well structured with a crunchy finish."
Argos Shiraz, 2014, Joanne Irvine
Highly Recommended - Decanter, May 2023, Barossa Shiraz Panel Tasting, 90 points: "Generous, with savoury, dark fruit aromas. Opulent and sweet on the palate with a silky feel, cocoa and nougat with toasty oak and roasted black fruits give way to a lingering finish."
Argos Shiraz, 2015, Joanne Irvine
Recommended - Decanter, May 2023, Barossa Shiraz Panel Tasting, 89 points: "Caramel oak nose with hints of coconut. Baked, jammy fruit, very concentrated, and a dusty tannin finish."

De Visu 172 Grenache Blanc, Languedoc - France
Mango and lovage cream. An almost dessert-like richness but with Grenache Blanc's classic 'toasted-porridge' savouriness showing through on the end. Not long, but perfect for a creamy chicken bake!
15.5 points
Scotchmans Hill Chardonnay, Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria - Australia
Popcorn and smoky buttered corn-cob aromas. Silky fruit, smoky threads, delicately salty acidity. A play of yuzu-citrus crystalline angles and yellow-mirabelle-plum fleshiness. There is a little walnut tucked into the edges and the fragrance of lemongrass fills the finish. Refined and shapely.
17 points
Scotchmans Hill Pinot Noir, Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria - Australia
Very pale, even for Pinot, and beautifully bright. Smells of crushed hawthorn berries and roses in the rain. Lucent fruit, holding a bruise-red fragility. Blood orange bleeds raspberries, red apple skin and cinnamon. Limpid tannins. Ironstone minerality. If garnet were a liquid, surely this is what it would taste like.
17 points
Cantina Lavis Muller-Thurgau, Trentino - Italy
A neat, dry, unobtrusive wine that tastes of alpine wildflowers and green apples and meadow herbs. The acidity has a lovely introverted zing.
15.5 points
Cantina Lavis Teroldego, Trentino - Italy
An edgy, energetic wine that tastes like kissing wild-strawberry- and forest-blueberry-stained lips. There is an undertow of fresh mushrooms and mushroom compost and a lick of old lichen-covered stones and then the finish loops back to fruit and the tannins feel like little fingers pressing in gently. A friendly red with lovely mountain freshness.
15.5 points
Big Beltie Cabernet Sauvignon, Languedoc - France
Classic blackcurrant fruit. Ripe, bodacious and extrovert. Lovely network of thyme, tarragon and sweetbox bring herbal fragrance. Plush, velvety tannins. Easy, ready and full of charm.

Pierre Cros Minervois Rouge, France
I hadn't come across Pierre Cros before, although some of his older vintages have been tasted by Jancis quite some time back, and I am delighted to have now done so. This wine is simply delicious. No mucking around – it tastes of vineyard, fruit and garrigue. The fruit is glowing, expressing the shining best side of each variety but in seamless harmony, and the tannins ribbon through and around the fruit in the same seamlessly harmonic way. Top notes of mintiness and an almost imperceptible bass rhythm of sooty minerality. The finish is astonishingly quenching. Everything I could ask for from Minervois. And VGV. It will probably age but I'd strongly recommend drinking it now, while the fruit is singing its heart out.

Matthew Jukes, Wine of the Week, 06/01/2023: Verdejo Oro de Castilla, Rueda - Spain
"Bodega Hermanos del Villar makes this innocent-looking white wine. But beneath the surface, there is so much class here it defies belief. You can drink it at speed instead of any ubiquitous dry white and amaze your taste buds or slow down and admire the glorious vinous landscape of flavour set out before you. Oro is a slender, perfumed lemon pith and green apple skin-scented wine with uncommon complexity and length. It is my vinous vision for 2023, and it could not be more convivial or more soothing if it tried."
Matthew Jukes, The Finest Fifty Wines 2022:
Minervois Vieilles Vignes 2020, Domaie Pierre Cros, France
"I have never come across this estate before, but there is more brave heart attitude and vinous chutzpah buried in the core of this statesmanlike red wine than in a dungeon full of Châteauneuf-du-Papes! Made from 100-yearold Carignan, there is an extraordinary depth of mulberry fruit here, loaded with bonfire tones, and all hung together with a rich, toothsome, but not tannic, texture! Heart-warming and decidedly wintry, this is a very classy wine and one that would delight every committed carnivore on earth."
Joanna Simon’s Wine of the Week, 27/10/2022: Big Beltie Cabernet Sauvignon, Languedoc, France
"...in case you're jumping to conclusions, this isn't a big belter of a wine. It's medium-full and pulsing with Cabernet Sauvignon energy and rich, sunny fruit. Think plum and cassis lightly brushed with aromatic, woody herbs, supple tannins discreetly wrapped in oak, and a flourish of bay-leaf spicy freshness. Altogether very appealing. It's an accommodating Cabernet that you could drink with lamb in almost any form, from roast to moussaka to chops with chimichurri, or with beef, duck, slow-roast, herby, garlicky pork, sausage and mash, or roast squash and root vegetables or vegetarian lasagne."
Tom Stevenson, Wine Writer, Big Beltie Cabernet Sauvignon, Languedoc, France
"Well, what a belter of a Beltie that was! Belter as in lovely, rather than big, that is. And so beautifully proportioned; phenolically ripe, yet only 13.5%! A styish, gulpingly good red with soft, ripe black fruits, a soft and supple texture, and the smoky-creamy-coffee allure of oak."
Wine Merchant Magazine, Tried & Tested
Avonda 'WE' Saperavi 2018, Solomnishvila - Georgia
"Giorgi Solomnishvila is one of Georgia's most admired winemakers, achieving great things with Saperavi, aka "the Mabec of the Caucasus". Matured in qvevri and then oak barrels, this example has refined forest fruit and sweet spice, but also some loveable rustic edges. Solomnishvili's advice? "Drink - life is short."
Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin White, Paarl – South Africa
"Paarl based Avondale has a proud tradition of looking after its workers, which includes its army of ducks, whose job it is to control the snails, that have developed a taste for its vines. A biodynamic Chenin Blanc, with some Rousanne, Muscat, Semillon and Viognier in the mix, it's a pleasant summer quencher."
Avondale Qvevri, Paarl – South Africa
"Paarl-based Avondale claims to be the first winery in South Africa to ferment wines in qvevri, allowing the wine to accentuate the fruit characters but also minerality of the grapes - in this case whole-bunch Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. There's an earthy character, too, which anchors those rampant red fruit flavours and adds complexity."
Scotchmans Hill Pinot Noir, Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria - Australia
"The Bellarine peninsula near Geelong in Victoria has a cool maritime climate that, on paper, suits Pinot Noir and the proof is right here in the bottle. There's an agreeable earthiness as well as gentle plumminess and a hint of spice. The kind of wine you could confidently pour for even the pickiest Pinot perfectionist."
Big Beltie, Cabernet Sauvignon, Languedoc - France
"A decent, affordable Cab, with ripe berry juiciness and a leanness that suits the back story."
Porto Pocas 20 Year Old Tawny Port - Portugal
"Like the best examples of its category, there's a lightness and elegance cutting through its nutty cakey depths, bolstering its credentials as a festive digestif."
Teroldego Vigneti Cantina Lavis, Trentino - Italy
"The Teroldego variety is at home here in Trentino, adapting well to the sub-Mediterranean climate of South Tyrol. It's clearly in expert hands with the Cantina Lavis co-operative, which has crafted a soft and approachable wine with plummy notes, and an extra level of depth as a result of five months on its lees and some partial oak ageing."
Primitivo Appassimento, Preciso
"You can dry your grapes on straw mats or you can make it happen on the living vine, as is the case at this Puglian estate, where the stalks of mature berries are twisted to stop further nurishment. This creates a 30% reduction in liquid and a concentration of raspberry and cherry flavours, enhanced by a hint of blood and spice."
Les Argelieres Viognier
"Languedoc winemaker Marilyn Lasserre's brief is to bring out the true character of the varieties she works with, and she's ticked all the boxes with this peachy, apricot-tinged Viognier. We've all tasted Viognier that plays these cards rather too enthusiastically, but Lasserre has maintained elegance (the vineyards are on hilly sites) as well as fruit concentration."
