A small appellation of some 775 hectares, situated on the northern bank of the Gironde, Fronsac, with a satellite region of Canon-Fronsac neighbouring it, is dominated by clay, gravel and ironstone soils which give deep, rich and full bodied red wines. The major grapes in Fronsac are Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Franc (12%) with the remainder being Cabernet Sauvignon. Approximately 100 estates and Châteaux produce wine, and the climate is Atlantic based, but with less rainfall than the Medoc. Chateau La Vielle Cure is the most famous Château and is renowned for rich, firm wines that can age well for up to 15 years.
