Domaine Pierre Cros

Pierre Cros is a retired rugby player, a formidable man and a maverick winemaker. Based in Badens in Minervois, he has scant regard for the authorities, making wines that he wants to drink, even if the authorities don’t allow the growing of certain grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Nebbiolo. His 20 hectares of vines include the classic Southern French varieties of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah with some low yielding vines dating from 1905. “I neither pretend to teach you how you should taste my wines… nor when… or why… or (even worse) with whom. The bouquet is intense with black cherry, cassis, chocolate and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is rich and expressive, brimming with sweet red and black fruits, lively freshness, and a lovely touch of spice. Juicy and full of energy, hints of black olive and liquorice add depth, whilst the wine’s beautiful structure and long finish make it both powerful and approachable.
Produced from vines over 100 years old, with the oldest plot dating back to 1905, this cuvée comes from 4 carefully selected parcels. The grapes undergo whole bunch carbonic maceration before and then aged in 2 -3 year old 228 litre barrels for 8 months.
